Behind The Lens

Location

On the County Costal trail, next to Fitzgerald Marine Reserve in Moss Beach, 25 minutes South of San Francisco, CA.

Time

12 noon , early March

Lighting

I did not use the flash the sun was over head

Equipment

I used a Nikon Coolpix P80, on the close up automatic setting, no flash, no tripod.

Inspiration

I love how coiled up and furry ferns fronds can be before they uncoil and reveal their rows of leaves. There are great repetitive forms and unique textures in the new fronds.

Editing

I cropped the image and used photoshop effect , vibrance usually, and adjusted the clarity, sharpened the focus and enhanced the color. I like the contrasting dark background. 1/70, f 4-.5, FL 22.9 ,ISO 288

In my camera bag

I loved the Nikon Coolpix P80 camera, easy to use on the tide pools, and easy to zoom in 18 times and easy to get images in focus and up close images. Now I use a Nikon DX 55-300 lens and a Nikon D5300 and carry an 18-55 mm lens along. I carried both cameras for a while but now I seem to be getting more images in focus using aperture priority and carry the D5300 camera.

Feedback

I shoot a number of the same image from different angels, using a flash, using the automatic close up setting, different Aperture settings, try it from farther away... then once the images are on the computer I may have 5-7 images to choose from. Some are sharper focus that others at least this way I have a chance to maybe get something I like enough to use. I often adjust my final images in Lightroom for exposure, sharpening, clarity and saturation. I also use the photoshop settings, vibrance or other effects to see what enhances the image, most of the time slight adjustments in develop using Lightroom are all I need other times effects can really brighten up the colors and the subject.
