Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken near the entrance door of a church in our city- Bacolod city, Philippines. The old lady was selling flowers to churchgoers for a living..Noticing the sad look on her eyes, i said to myself, i just have to take a photo of her..The lines on her face tell a story of how difficult life is...Probably she is living alone and her children abandoned her and now living their own lives...She looks tired and seem resigned to what the future holds...Its really one of most saddest face i shot or seen....

Time

It was morning around 7am with an overcast sky...She was in a shade portion of the entrance of the church....Early morning usually puts me a mood to take photos..

Lighting

The overcast sky outside the church and the fact she was in a shade portion to the church gave this soft light...i use natural light for most of my photos...nothing can beat it especially when it comes from a big open door or window....

Equipment

I had a DSLR in my bag, but when i need to take a quick shot like this one i used my Canon powershot point and shoot to avoid intruding into the subject mood...I took two frames before the subject noticed what was happening ....then she moved away...

Inspiration

It was the soft light that touched the old woman face...the fact that it was candid brought out the emotion inside her into her face...Light seems to bring out the real essence in things around us, whether it's a face or natural objects...i try to be ready to shoot for this miracle of light especially in the morning with a Dslr or a compact camera....I hate myself if i miss this kind of opportunity to use the gift that was given...

Editing

I used Photoshop 5 to do some minor adjustments...

In my camera bag

At present I still have my old Nikon DSLR that is compatible with my old Nikon manual lenses...35-200 3.5, 105 2.5 , 50 l.2 mm fixed lenses and the 18-55mm kid lens...and other old Nikkor lenses....Lately i have the Lumix Lx3 and a Canon powershot ...small but terrible...

Feedback

Photo opportunities come in a flash....Light can change in a matter of seconds...Be ready with a DSLR ( whatever brand, its not the camera , its the photographer that counts) and two compact cameras set on auto to capture special moments that life presents......Learn to see, to feel and keep on shooting relentlessly ....My motto? Shoot first, ask question later...to do this, preset your cameras for the condition outside or shoot on auto, then make the adjustments later...Shoot close, shoot wide, shoot diagonally, shoot vertical and horizontal...then if the subject is still around take a few seconds to make the adjustments needed to get the results you desire....
