Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Holland, Michigan. A friend and I went on a 90 minute drive to photograph the tulips during the Holland Tulip Festival. We were hoping for the sun to come out however it was cool, cloudy and with light rain.

Time

The photo was taken in the late morning on May 12th. 2013. After taking photos of large groups of tulips I began to concentrate on twos and threes.

Lighting

I photographed this tulip as it looked without flash only using the ambient light to make it look natural.

Equipment

I used a tripod and a Canon 5D mark 1 camera with Canon 24-70 2.8 lens.

Inspiration

I have on numerous times, over the years photographed tulips in full and partial sun. Seeing the droplets falling onto the tulips in the cloudy conditions made me want to make a photograph that I would be happy with.

Editing

I used photoshop CS5 to process this photo, however I only used levels to lighten and to enhance the photo as you see now.

In my camera bag

I usually carry my Canon 5D camera and the 24-70 2.8 lens. I also have a 70-200 2.8 lens and a 100 Canon macro lens. I use my Canon flash 580EX as I see the need for additional lighting. A light travel tripod is also in my car for those rock solid shots.

Feedback

Take the photograph that you went some place to take even if the sun or wind or whatever is not in you favor, the photograph may be a winner or at the very least make you happy with your attempt. Many times I will bracket a photo if I am not sure of exposure, that is, one normal, one over and one under.
