Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken one evening about sunset off the pier in Grand Haven, Michigan.

Time

My wife and I visit this area to see people, the pier, lighthouse and sunsets. This was in the Summer about 9:30PM and the sun began to drop and gave us this red looking sky and water along with the sailboat for a good photo.

Lighting

This sailboat with the people reminded me of the old adage: Red sky at night, sailors delight and red sky in the morning, sailors take warning...

Equipment

I used my Canon 5D Mark 11 and my 24 to 70MM 2.8 zoom lens. I do not remember the settings but set it manually to get the best possible sunset with a longer exposure and correct F-stop for proper exposure with a 400 ISO.

Inspiration

I have taken a lot of photos of sunsets piers and lighthouses and the sky lighting was just right for this sailboat and sunset photo.

Editing

I used photoshop to enhance this photo by using the red filter under image, adjustments, photo filter- red.

In my camera bag

I am an older photographer in my seventies , so I do not take a lot of camera equipment with me on my walk, that does not mean that I do not have it in the car if I need or want to use it. I have a 70-200 2.8 Canon telephoto lens, a wide angle Canon 15mm lens and a14mm to 40Mmm Canon zoom lens. Along with numerous filters and a polarizer filter that I use occasionally. Tripod and flash if needed.

Feedback

A number of times I have been to this area to capture sunsets and it does not always happen or look as lovely or as colorful as this sunset .Plan ahead if you have time and look for the best point of view and placement of objects that you might want to place artfully in your photo. As a rule sunsets are short and there is very little time to run around much, be prepared...
