Behind The Lens

Location

The photograph of the man above was taken during London Pride 2014 in Central London during muggy, rainy afternoon when thousands gathered and marched through the UK capital to celebrate this special day.

Time

It was a muggy, rainy and warm Saturday afternoon around 14.55 when the parade was about to end.

Lighting

The light was grey as there was no sun, only low clouds. I was standing on the payment and he was higher than me and my concerns were his face will turn out black / in the shadow but centre point focus helped a lot.

Equipment

It was time when I was working with my beloved Canon 7D (currently I take my photos with 6D model). I used telephoto zoom: Canon L 70-300 Lens. I never use flash and it was this time. Photo was taken; 1/250 at f 9.0, ISO320.

Inspiration

2014 was the year when I was already (and I still am) into street photography. As I have never photographed Pride Event before, I said to myself that I need to go as there would be many great opportunities to capture great streets scenes. I set myself a challenge; focus on faces of people either the participants or the viewers. I was looking for unique faces, men or women with dark eyes in white clothes as this would create a great contrast. As only I spot this gentleman, I looked into his eyes; he responded immediately. Gave me the sign that he is ready, I fired the camera; taken around 7 photographs of him. This is the photo from that day. Hi dark, bright eyes, open chest, veil on his head, I knew straight away I need to capture him.

Editing

Yes, I did. I always take my photographs at high shutter speeds around 1/1250, ISO auto. I use Lightroom for my post-processing and over last year, I also use Photoshop to finalise the photograph. I use my own developed presets or I treat each photograph individually. When post-processing, I am almost obsessed about overexposure; use clarity a lot, recently dehaze and highlights. I remove shadows carefully in order not to create too much grain. The last steps are: straighten the photo, convert into black and white and do last tweaks.

In my camera bag

My Canon 6D is almost everyday with me with 50mm f1.4 lens attached (lighter) or my favourite lens: 24-105 L IS lens.

Feedback

I have been doing Street Photography for last four years. My advice to any person would be: open your heart, soul to the world that is around us. Do not force yourself that I need to take this very photo. It will come sooner or later. Challenge yourself, set a goal for the day; faces, hands, gestures, silhouettes etc. Do not spend too much time on setting the camera. If you are not sure; set it on P mode and go out and photograph. Location is important; come back to the same place as often as possible; you will feel more comfortable; arrive to the spot, walk around, see what is happening, have a coffee, observe the people around you and be ready to photograph the very moment that nobody has done before and possibly will never take place again. Good Luck.
