This photo was taken at historic Fort Macon in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina. It's a really interesting place for photo sessions and I'm so glad Kristi & Colby chose it for their session.Time
We got very lucky as timing was everything for this amazing couple! They had to be in Wilmington for their ball that evening so we had to have their session mid afternoon! This photo was taken mid-day at approximately 2:30 pm.Lighting
Thank goodness for the clouds acting as nature's soft box! The diffused sun was gorgeous and was helped out a little bit by some fill flash.Equipment
This image was created using my Nikon D7000, 18-105 mm lens at 48mm, and my SB700 flash unit.Inspiration
Kristi and Colby are an amazing couple. He's a Marine, she's a nurse. I love showing how much they adore each other and in this photo, you can't help but notice exactly that. I love the combination of modern USMC Dress Blues, her stunning gold ball gown and the history of Fort Macon.Editing
With all of my portraits, there is always post processing. I start with things like white balance, playing around with raw settings and pull it into photoshop from there. Kristi & Colby are absolutely gorgeous on their own so not much was done for correction, just some artistic decisions regarding contrast & toning. In my camera bag
I still use my trusty D7000 with battery grip, it's an amazing camera body and perfect for my needs! I also still keep my 18-105 handy because I never know when I'm going to want something other than one of my primes handy. I also have 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm 1.8 primes. I'm a wide open shooter and have been leaning more toward my prime lenses lately. I always keep my OCF set up handy, my SB700, triggers & parapop.Feedback
Always show the relationship! With Kristi and Colby it's extremely easy because they quite plainly adore each other. We got a lot of amazing images that day, even with me in an ankle boot and Kristi in heels for the first time in 9 months due to a car accident. Touching each other, looking at each other. One of my favorite things to do is just let my couples interact naturally and adjust their pose from there. Great scenery is always a bonus, but in this case I wanted the photo to be all about them.
