Location
At the wolf reserve in South Salem, New York.Time
This was taken in the early evening as the sun was setting.Lighting
I was losing light but this came out nicely anyway. I was still able to get the light in the eye facing the sun. I was pleased with this as it is not easy with light blue eyes.Equipment
I handheld my Canon EOS 20D and used my 75-300mm zoom lens. No flash and no tripod.Inspiration
Lukas was my inspiration! This wolf is one of the most gorgeous animals I had ever seen. His piercing eyes add to the Wolf Lore. He was big and beautiful with gorgeous fur and piercing eyes. I wanted to get his face and not just the entire body. I love filling the frame with my subject, normally, but I liked the framing on this shot. You could tell he had just turned around to look.Editing
No post-processing.In my camera bag
Today I carry two SLR's, my Canon 70D and SL1. I have a variety of zoom lenses and a couple of S lenses for landscapes. I also have a Speedlight 580EX flash and several filters. I have a monopod and tripod but I rarely use them as I personally find them too cumbersome. I like to move around when shooting animals.Feedback
If your animal is contained in an enclosure, they will usually go to the same places. Watch them and learn their ways. Keep the camera moving on them and capture that perfect moment when the animal looks at you or looks out to the world. You want to capture their essence and show that they're alive. Watch where your light is, obviously, and use that to your advantage when not using a flash. I love using a zoom lens to make animals appear as though they're out in the wild even if they're in a center, zoo or cage.
