Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was done in our master bedroom, with my then 12 year son as the subject. Morbid? Yes. Fun? Oh yeah.

Time

Taken in the early afternoon. Time of day really doesn't matter here, as this is an indoor shot without any natural light.

Lighting

Not really, no flash, no natural light, just some standard indoor roof lighting.

Equipment

Shot with an old Canon 350D, with an Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6. Nothing fancy. In fact, this lens has gone the way of the subject, and is now used as a pen holder. Other than that, the only "equipment" was my son, my bed and a white cloth.

Inspiration

I was part of a fun online photography group that gave each other weekly challenges. This week the challenge was "People you don't know". Obviously I know my own son, anything else would be even more sad than the picture itself, but the idea was to portrait "John Doe". No-one knows John Doe, at least not until he is identified. I found a toe-tag online, printed it, filled out some details and set up the shot.

Editing

The only post processing done was to convert to black and white, and some cropping.

In my camera bag

Normally I shoot with a Canon 50D these days, and either my Canon 50mm 1.4 or a Sigma 10-20.

Feedback

This is simple, not much technique or practice required. For the most part, a bit of crazy and some creativity gets you a long way. You can always learn new methods, lighting tricks and general photography technique, but in the end, the only thing that limits you as a photographer is your own mind and your own imagination.
