Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo near Huntington Beach pier during a period of very high surf. Ths little fellow was darting in and out of the sea foam looking for and occasionally finding food, then he'd run right back in. I happened to catch him in several frames, this was the best. I am for the most part a self taught photographer, having taken the odd correspondence course and watching a lot of videos. This allowed me to realize the rule of thirds in a very good way with this photo.

Time

This was taken mid day during a high surf warning. That's the reason I went to the beach, to try and capture some big waves with my camera. I was standing under the Huntington Beach pier when I took this, so I had plenty of shade for myself. I was not alone, several photographers were set up near me. I caught this one just right, I think

Lighting

I had to wait and of course shoot many frames before everything was right. In this case, the light allowed me to use a fast shutter speed to capture this little guy, he was darting in and out of the sea foam pretty quickly

Equipment

This was captured on my Pentax K30 I believe, I've moved on to a K70. I honestly don't recall which body it was. I was using my Tamron 18-200 lens set to auto focus, no flash was needed. Plenty of light at mid day. Handheld, no tripod, might have used shutter priority and would have it set around 1/250th (due to lens focal length) and ISO 400. It's been a while since I took this photo

Inspiration

This bird's persistence at risking being taken by a wave was what made me take this photo. He did NOT give up

Editing

I cropped to use the frame better, and possibly a bit of sharpening but it didn't need much, I got really lucky (or stubborn.. I must have captured 50 images of this little fellow, this was the best)

In my camera bag

My only working body at this point (my K30 kinda died sorta) is a Pentax, currently a K70. I have a old steed Tamron 18-200 lens that is probably not much longer for this world, a couple extra batteries and some lens cleaning gear.. rocket blower, brush, cloth and fluid is all I usually have in my bag. I'd like to have a huge bag, 2 bodies (at least) and many more lenses of course but due to budget constraints I must keep it simple.

Feedback

Shoot, shoot, shoot. Practice. Educate yourselves on basic photography principles, and use them. Seek and be willing to accept constructive criticism about your work. You can't progress or improve if you aren't willing to be taught (CONSTRUCTIVE criticism is the operative word..learn to know the trash from the treasure)
