Location
There is a rest stop on westbound Interstate 40 close to the meteor crater. It was called Meteor Crater Rest Stop at the time, I'm not sure if it's even still thereTime
We were getting tired having just driven from California headed home to Albuquerque, pulled over, and while the girls were otherwise occupied I took a little walk. This would have been mid to late afternoonLighting
I noticed the lighting was perfect for the shot, I got lucky with the exposure with so many brilliant highlights. They could have blown out easilyEquipment

I took this photo 11 years ago so I don't remember much of what I did to it but I probably backed off the highlights a bitIn my camera bag
I carry a dslr and one or two lenses..wide to medium (28-70 or so) and a wide-tele. For the last couple decades that's meant a 18-200 or a 28-200Feedback
Take a few shots with varying exposure, shoot raw if you have it, to preserve as much detail in highlights and shadows. This allows more "wigge room" for post processing to fit your vision
