Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken more than 4 years ago, in the lovely Alexandria city in Egypt. I was participating in a photography workshop and we headed to the "Mexx" district, it is well known of its ancient architectures of the fishermen houses and fishing boats, and is considered one of the most popular areas for photography in Alexandria.

Time

I took this photo at almost 4:00 p.m. on July 2010, the day was sunny and has almost no clouds on the sky. This photo is definitely (in my opinion) considered as one of my best photos that I have taken in my entire life so far.

Lighting

The time of the photo was so sunny, but I took it in a very narrow street in the area and there was no direct sunlight hitting it, the light was all natural. Also the door has a crack and a missing part at its bottom that allowed the light from behind the door to enter through it...that helped to make a natural soft background that isolated the iron locker from its surroundings.

Equipment

I took this photo using a Canon SX10-IS camera with the macro mode set to ON (it is a point and shoot bridge camera), and I used only the natural light without any tripod.

Inspiration

That day we were about a 100 photographers scattered at the same place trying to get nice shots, I was sure that most of us will take similar photos even if they are awesome ones, so I was looking for something extraordinary to shoot, I was wandering around and spotted that locker, it was rusted and freezed on a horizontal position on that old wooden door, I never saw a position like that before and so I decided to try getting something out of it, It just popped into my mind to try to shot the locker from above it and make use of the passing light from the broken door below it, I tried to bring the feeling of the effect of time on this door and structure into the photo.

Editing

I'm not a good Photoshop user, so instead I use ACDsee Pro software in my most post-processing jobs, like this photo; I did a little bit of contrast and color elevations, and removed some tiny pieces of torn papers on the ground around the locker...that's all :)

In my camera bag

I had only the Canon SX 10-IS camera during the time of this photo, nowadays I got a bag that full of nice photography equipment in compared to my past, I now had a Nikon D7100 body, a Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 lens (an awesome lens in street photography), a Tokina 100mm Macro f/2.8; which I think is on par with the Nikkor 105mm Macro lens, a Tokina 12-28mm f/4 wide angle lens, a Sigma 150-500mm f/5.6-6.3 for birds and wildlife photography; which i'm fascinated by it though i'm not surrounded by many places to shoot this type of life. I also had an ND 16x Hoya Filter and Hoya CPL filter which I found them very useful in landscape photography.

Feedback

The most important advice is to try to know the place that you are going to as much as you can, and to have a look on what others are usually shooting, then you shoot something different, otherwise your works will not be distinguished from others even if they are very good...any place must have something extraordinary about it to get it in your photos, whether its soul, structure, people, ....a lot of things you can find...Take your picture inside your mind first before you press the shutter button, look around you carefully and you will be amazed :)
