A lovely waterfall and nice effect.

If you crop this to eliminate the glare off the flat top (start the photo at the curtain) it would be much more powerful.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Skipton Woods, Yorkshire, just out the back of Skipton Castle. This was the first time I had tried a long exposure of anything particularly let alone water, but the positioning and lighting seemed ideal so I gave it a go.

Time

The walk round the woods was the last thing we did during an summer holiday in August 2014 before heading back to the cottage, the photo was taken just before 17:00.

Lighting

It was a very bright day as can be seen to the back right of the photo, but as it was getting later and the waterfall was sheltered under trees allowing enough light through to stay well lit and also to filter through more strongly in places to throw in a few catch little lights.

Equipment

This was taken with a Fujifilm X-E2 with the 18-55mm F2.8-4 R LM OIS Fujinon lens on a Gorillapod

Inspiration

This was a chance find. I had been thinking about trying long exposure for some time, particularly about trying it with waterfalls, but living on the edge of the fens waterfalls are not exactly common. The lighting seemed good and we were in no particular rush so we took a few moments so I could have a go. Seems the conditions were pretty much perfect for it.

Editing

A very slight crop with a little reduction to the highlights but otherwise nothing to change.

In my camera bag

The equipment I carry around with me is not a lot different to what I used in the photo. I also have a Fujifilm Finepix HS20 which only gets used from time to time these days, and I will sometimes have a larger Manfrotto Tripod as well as the Gorillapod, though this only tends to come out if it is only me out with the cameras.

Feedback

Not an awful lot to suggest really, if you know a waterfall then keep an eye on the weather. If the waterfall is in the open rather than under shelter like this one was then you don't want it to be too bright, so a slightly overcast day would be better. Try to set up in a place where you don't have too many very bright areas so try to avoid including any sky if you can unless you have access to ND Grad filters - still on my wishlist hence the shelter under the trees for this photo was so ideal.
