Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at Fountains Abbey, the National Trust property in Yorkshire This was looking along the laybrothers refectory all the way to the end of the cellarium.

Time

This was taken just before we stopped for lunch - I was out for the day with my family whilst on holiday in August so was able to take advantage of the good light.

Lighting

Although indoors there was enough light coming through the windows at the side and behind me to be able to pull this off.

Equipment

The photo was taken hand held using the Fujifilm X-E2 with the XF18-55mmF2.8-4 R LM OIS lens

Inspiration

I had seen many photos of this part of the abbey before and they were largely the same kind of shot looking from one corner to the other - I wanted to try something a little different so took the central pillars as the centre line focus.

Editing

The photo was taken in colour, so converted to B&W with a bit of an increase on the contrast.

In my camera bag

At the moment just the X-E2 and XF18-55mmF2.8-4 R LM OIS lens which I have on review from Fuji (my normal camera is actually a Fujifilm Finepix HS20EXR), also carry a Gorillapod tripod on most family days out now for when needed, for more photo based days I also carry a Manfrotto tripod and head

Feedback

As much as I would love to offer specifics I tend to rely on instinct first off, try it out and then adjust settings according to how I think it has worked. As much as you need an eye to view the picture as a whole I find the best way to see what will work is to see it through the viewfinder - see what fits and what doesn't and then you can move if you feel something is missing.
