Location
The photo “Cheers” was taken in a suit of a local hotel. The Model had a travel time of 10 hours round-trip so we agreed to make it an over night trip, This was safer for the model and had an additional benefit of having a great location for two sessions , one each day,Time
It was during the morning of the second day session when we were shooting the “Have A Drink” sets. We had collaborated on photos with several beverages, containers, location and styles.Lighting
The lighting for this shot was a single 22” beauty dish with diffusion sock on a 400w strobe unit triggered remotely, placed to the models front right about 4 feet away. I had a second strobe at high left aimed directly at the glass for high lights at first but it seemed to take away too much attention from the model in the back.Equipment
“Cheers” was created by moving a night stand away from the wall about 5 feet and placing a martini glass filled with HPNOTIQ Liqueur. We tried several varieties of the image. She wore a string bikini at first, using her hands on her hips to hide the clothing that wasn’t covered by the glass. At the end, we opted to go with al natural.Inspiration
I’m a hobbyist who accidentally got the photography bug in 2004. I was given a “once in a lifetime” opportunity to take pictures of a internationally known celebrity in Los Angeles, At the time, I didn’t even own a camera so I bought a Canon Digital Rebel and made the trip to California. It was a life experience I’ll remember fondly my whole life… with one exception… with no previous photography experience, I took a couple hundred pictures that were so bad that to this day, I don’t show them to anyone. I vowed, never again would I take a picture of a person and be embarrassed to show it to them.Editing
The image “Cheers” didn’t need much post-processing. The night stand was cleaned up, there was some wood grain that seemed distracting to me. I blurred the model and background a little bit to give the appearance of depth. I always frame my shots a little bit larger and crop them to the final composition at post-processing.In my camera bag
Over the years I have built up a verity of equipment, umbrellas, gels, grids, lens, stands… All of it isn’t needed on every session but it’s kind of nice to have some of the things at times. For me, I became fond to strobe lights so I have two 800w and one 400w units and three 8ft medium duty stands. By far, my favorite modifier is the 22” beauty dish with diffusion sock. The light is soft and even and is fantastic for portraits. Many of my photos were taken at location on a 300 ache ranch so a portable battery pack was a must for shooting in the middle of nowhere.Feedback
Be patient and experiment. Some of my must exciting shots came from someone saying “…lets try this…”
