When I originally posted this image I struggled with my decision to do so. Over the years these roadside memorials have dotted the country's landscape. I captured this image during a recent summer when more than a dozen motorcylists lost thier lives. Literally every week, sometimes two or three people were killed while riding. I've seen dozens of these memorials and have known some those for whom they are erected. This one in particular gripped my heart and would not loosen its hold. Everyone has suffered loss. Everyone hurts for that loss, myself included. I haven't forgotten....I don't believe any of us has.

When I look at this photo, I cannot do it without tears. There is a marker at the side of a road for my son, James. This photo shows exactly how sad a heart can be. What touched me the most were the messages written on it. I know what they say, even without reading them-I wrote one. Thank you,Paul for posting this. It helped me to work on my grief-and I am sure I am not the only one.

as you drive down almost any road, you will see a marker quite similar, the personal experience of losing a loved one that so many have expressed here has brought me to tears, when a photograph is so powerful to evoke such feelings you know you have touched the world

congratulations paul, this is a lot of words, nothing simple about, it's heart wrenching and beautiful at the same time, to all those who have buried a child such as i, and i quote,"there is no world in the webster dictionary that describes the lost of a child", this is a well deserving photo, my son has no marker on the side of the road, it's etched in my heart, my soul, my ever being, thanks paul;)

Marla, you have my sincere condolences on the loss of your son. I was apprehensive about posting this photo, but it has touched so many people that my apprehension has been quelled. I've shared this tis story with a few others: My brother lost his fiance years ago to a drunk driver. He was a classmate giving her a ride home on her last day of high school. I remember it so clearly. As they were leaving the parking lot of the school she called my name and I can still see her leaning out the window of that powder blue '67 Mustang waving to me....in retrospect it's as if she were saying goodbye for the last time though no one knew the horror that awaited 10 minutes down the road. If only......

What an inspiring photo! A lonesome reminder of a life that was taken in an instant without warning ,leaving such a void in so many lives! I think most can relate to a scene such as this! Maybe not as directly as some but touched by the loss of a friend on the side of a lonely road such as this! Such a powerful shot and emotional experience for you as well as others! God bless you and you deserved this win by far!

We all have seen these crosses by the side of roads. They do make us sad for the loss and make us think how blessed we are to have know them. Your photo is very touching.
