Behind The Lens

Location

Brisbane Convention Centre South Brisbane during Creative Generation 2014

Time

Indoor at a Matinee Performance, a friend had loaned me this small light weight camera. Usually I shoot with a 5D canon with a long lens, but since I was pretty close to the action, I was quite eager to see how the Olympus worked in concert lighting.

Lighting

Concert lighting. Waiting. Waiting. Waiting. What some would say waiting for the money shot. I knew that either the balloons or streamers would explode over the performers. But the mystery was the when! I knew they would bring the concert lights up to highlight the colours of the 600 hundred performers on stage, the lighting would bring out the colours of the explosion of streamers.

Equipment

Olympus light weight, beautiful in construction and what a dream to hide in your pocket. Tricky swapping the lenses in dark though. Hand held and play the patience game.

Inspiration

Creative Generation is the flagship for Education Queensland encouraging young people to participate in the Arts of Queensland. 600 young people from all over the state of Queensland Australian formed a mass choir plus another 600 young people make up singers, dancers and performers. Young artists were mentored by professional artists in a variety of art forms. All converge on the Brisbane Convention Centre in July every year to perform three concerts. The photo was taken in the 10th year celebration, young people I knew were participating in the event. I wanted to capture a shot that brought truth to the statement that I've been telling people about the performance. That "This concert is Bigger than Ben Hur!" That moment that I captured was the climax of the performance showcasing all the dancers, singers on stage with their hands to the epic, all in one place. We (the audience) were on our feet, clapping along and I knew we were in for a surprise!! The roar of the crowd, the blast of the streamers gave me a shock and snapped it right on time. So pleased I snapped it.

Editing

I tweeked the colour a little. A very technical term. I always like playing around with the colour of shots to bring out an interesting look to it.

In my camera bag

I shoot with a variety of cameras. I have a love affair with canon 5D combine with a 70-200 lens when I'm shooting portraits of young people. But really happy with 60D & 1DX or 1D (as long as it is not the 1D mk 2 as I really have trouble with the menu settings.) Have played around with Nikon so can certainly sing their praises as well. This Olympus was a real surprise to me, about the performance of it in low level and unpredictable lighting.

Feedback

Use a tripod with a trigger. Take some test shots with the lighting Know what is going to happen and where it will happen from. Decide is it the hands or the streamers and adjust the aperture accordingly.
