Behind The Lens

Location

I took this shot one night after I got my kids down to sleep. I set up a mini studio in my basement. I took a black table cloth and used it for my background and set the Christmas Cactus on my kids table. I had a box light set up above the Christmas Cactus. It sat about one foot above the plant.

Time

When I set up shots that I want to control the light I like to take them at night. When taking shots at night all the light I use I have complete control of.

Lighting

When I use flashes on flowers I like using gels It really makes colors pop out more. I used one box light above the subject that does not move. I move my other box light around to cause different shadows upon the subject.

Equipment

I used the Nikon D80, Lensbaby Muse, 2- Nikon SB 900, Light Box, Nikon SC-29 TTL cord, Gels and Rogue light box.

Inspiration

I wanted to practice with the gels and light placement. I took many different shots and I decided to try using the HDR option on CS5 Photoshop. It was fun taking the photos and then it was fun trying different combos for a HDR shot.

Editing

I took many different pictures and made them into a HDR picture. Each picture had a slightly different focus points and also had different positions of light hitting the flowers.

In my camera bag

I keep a Nikon D300 as my camera. I keep a Nikon 70-300 mm, Nikon 35mm, Tamron 17-50mm, Lensbaby lens kit. I also keep ND filters for my shorter lenses and polarized lenses for each lens. I have 2 Nikon SB 900 and one SB- 60. I keep Rogue gels and Rogue light modifier. I keep extra rechargeable batteries for my camera and flashes. Pocket Wizards, remote triggers, TTL cables, and pc cables. Always extra memory cards.

Feedback

Experimenting is key. Trying different gels can make a picture really pop. When using several different lights sources don't be afraid to move one of the lights around to give different shadows and highlights to the subject. The last thing is to try different photos to plug into a HDR effect.
