I shot this from the roof of a hotel on the beach in Mazatlan MexicoTime
It was near sundown when I took this. You can notice the long shadows of the people on the beach. This was the effect I was hoping to achieve when I first visualized the shotLighting
Of course in a shot like this, the lighted is going to be all natural. The afternoon low angle of the sun helps give dimension to the shot which otherwise might have turned out flat.Equipment
For this shot, I used a a tripod with the Sony a77 camera and a Carl Zeiss 135mm prime lensInspiration
I was living in Mazatlan Mexico and was shooting lots of different parts of the city, I remember telling my wife that I wanted to get some unique views from the roof of one of the many hotels that line the beach. At first I was kind of hesitant but I kmew the worst they could do is say no, I found the management to be very accommodating. In the following weeks,I went to several other hotels and was granted permission to shoot from their roofs as well. One hotel even allowed me to use their penthouse to shoot from. it was a fun project.Editing
I always shoot in RAW format so there was some post processing. I used ACR for the RAW file then opened in Photoshop CS4. I try to keep it simple, using contrast and saturation. I like the photo to be a true representation of what I saw and hope not to overcook when processing the shot.In my camera bag
I don't carry a lot of equipment when going out to look for a shot. The main reason for this is that I like to keep light and mobile because of the fact that I will be shooting several locations in a single outing.Feedback
My advise to anyone who is looking for similar shots is to always ask for permission when shooting on private property. Explain to the management what your intentions are and that you will fully abide by their regulations and emphasize that you will be safe. I think you will find them to be very helpful most of the time.
