Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this photo on the "malecon" in Mazatlan Mexico.

Time

This was very near sundown. It's hard to go wrong with low angled natural light combined with water.

Lighting

The lighting is completely ambient. I hung around the area for a while until I liked how low the sun was in the sky

Equipment

I shot this with my Sony a77 and a Minolta 50mm prime lens. Handheld.

Inspiration

I lived in Mazatlan for many years so I'm completely familiar with the city. This Monument is called "The Continuity if Life" and is a favorite gathering place for the locals and tourist. I visit this area almost every day. At night the monument has rotating, colored lighting. It is so beautiful. I am always inspired by it. After I uploaded the photo on my computer and saw that water spots had landed on the front of my lens, I knew right away that it would add to the aesthetic of the shot.

Editing

I shot this in raw format so yes Post processing was necessary. I normally use contrast, vibrance and exposure. I frequently use masking so I am apply to apply enhancements only where I feel they are needed in the photo. My main goal is to recreate the scene as I saw it in real life. I always finish off my editing process with some smart sharpening.

In my camera bag

I take my camera with me pretty much everywhere I go, so I don't carry a ton of equipment. Basically it's my camera and one or two lenses, a wide angle and a telephoto zoom. My tripod resides permanently in the trunk of the car for quick access if I feel I need it.

Feedback

Take your camera with you often and shoot, shoot, shoot!
