Behind The Lens

Location

Taken just outside the village of Kastraki, Greece among the rocks of the Meteora monastic complex.

Time

The photo was taken in the evening an hour or so before sunset.

Lighting

The shot was taken in the late evening so given that the shot is of Greece's stunning Thessalian landscape I knew I'd have some soft light and great shadows to work with as the sun sank lower in a slightly hazy sky.

Equipment

Hand-held shot using a Nikon D3100 with a Nikkor 18-55mm lens, no flash.

Inspiration

The place itself. Meteora is a fantastic geological site as well as being of major historical and religious importance. The pillars of rock jut up from nowhere at the edge of the Plain of Thessaly in northern Greece and many are themselves topped off with monasteries to create a mystical site worthy of its inclusion on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Editing

I gave it a small amount HDR treatment to emphasise the highlights on the rocks and the shadows and desaturated the colour slightly.

In my camera bag

Nikon D3100, Tamron 18-200mm lens and a Sigma 70-300mm lens. I've not been serious about photography for long so don't have much in the way of equipment so far.

Feedback

Be in the right place at the right time I suppose. If you want to take dramatic photos of famous sites early morning and late evening are probably best - softer light and great shadows. Do some research on sunrise and sunset times, scout locations and check the weather (not really a problem in Greece in summer!).
