the tight composition and portrait style work very well in this image, and the textures are amazing - thanks also for your very kind words, they are muchly appreciated!

Behind The Lens

Location

On the Murray River in Australia.

Time

Approx 2hrs after sunrise.

Lighting

Fog softened the light beautifully, creating an ethereal atmosphere that was so appealing. Got so carried away with the scenes before me that not only did I miss breakfast, I missed my 'heart starter' coffee as well, but totally worth the sacrifice.

Equipment

Canon 10D, 80-200 f2.8 @ 200mm, f4 for a shallow depth of field, hand-held @ 1/320s, no flash.

Inspiration

As it happened, luck played a huge part, framing the shot, the magpie magically appeared in the viewfinder, and perched on the perfect branch for this composition. I cropped the image this way to lead the eye from the texture of the trees, and then to the bird.

Editing

Very little was needed, increase colour temp to warm the image slightly. I always like to increase contrast and clarity to give the image a little more mood and punch, and in this case, gaussian blur to highlight the fog.

In my camera bag

Canon 5D mkIII, f2.8 24-70mm and f2.8 80-200mm lenses, 580EX speedlite, CP & ND filters, Manfrotto 055 tripod with ball head.

Feedback

Open your eyes, then open your mind to your surroundings, don't just shoot the image, create. Try and visualise the final image.
