Behind The Lens

Location

At home, Melbourne, Australia

Time

2pm, indoors

Lighting

This was purely one of those occasions where you see a good shot, pick up the camera, and shoot. My beautiful Granddaughter has just returned home after a trip to the shop with her Aunty, it was a cold day in winter, so she was rugged up. I walked into the room, saw her sitting in her stroller, Window light on the left and incandescent lighting immediately above her and to her right. I immediately fell in love with the lighting and the warm coloured clothing around that angelic face.

Equipment

Canon 5D MkIII, f2.8 80-200mm lens at 200mm f2.8, iso 6400. All available light, no flash and hand held

Inspiration

As I mentioned above, the lighting was subliminal, you could not have set up better lighting than this, and she had such an angelic look on her face that it screamed out to be captured. One of the most rewarding images I have taken over a 30 year professional wedding and portrait photographic career.

Editing

Not a lot of post processing was necessary, the Canon 5D mkIII is such a beautiful camera and when parameters in the base settings are set according to your preferences, the colour rendition is superb. Initially, vibrancy and clarity were increased slightly, contrast was lifted (mainly black contrast) for more punch. After these adjustments, the burn tool was used to vignette and burn out/darken extraneous detail in the background.

In my camera bag

Canon 5DmkIII, f2.8 24-70mm and f2.8 80-200mm lenses, 580EX speedlite, CP and ND filters, remote triggers, manfrotto 055 tripod with ball head. Quite often, I'll throw in an old Minolta Dynax 7xi with a 16mm fisheye lens. Love that fishey, but be aware of where your feet are!

Feedback

In regard to this image, the old boy scout motto - 'be prepared' would be well heeded. I always have the long lens on my mkIII, ISO is always set to auto, white balance at auto, therefore turning the camera into a point and shoot for close 'grab' shots. Mind you, this does not apply when when I am shooting a subject-specific shoot, where each situation determines a different approach.
