I took this photo in my parent's garden, in Buzau, Romania.Time
I took the photo around 14:30. This moth came to the flower garden every day around that time.Lighting
I only used natural light. It was a bright summer day, no additional lighting was necessary.Equipment
The camera was a Canon EOS 450D, with a 18-55 kit lens and 3 cheap close-up filters on top of it (+1, +2, +4). Apart from the magnification, the 3 close-up filters allowed me to get pretty close to the moth and they also contributed to the very shallow DOF, which would not have been possible with the kit lens alone.Inspiration
As a fan of macro photography and of bugs I had been trying to take a picture of one of these moths for years, but I could never get close enough fast enough. This was my lucky day. I managed to take 2 photos of this guy (this one and one from above) and that was it, it was gone. I still rank this among my best photos.Editing
I only did some basic editing (contrast, saturation, some cropping) in Digital Photo Professional. In my camera bag
My only camera is a Canon EOS 450D (currently in its 5th year of service). I mostly use a Canon 50mm f/1.8 II (my favorite lens) and a Canon 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 EF-S IS STM. I try to keep my bag as light as possible, so I don't put much else in it (except for a couple of spare memory cards and a spare battery).Feedback
I'm not an expert in macro photography or in working with insects, but I can share how I managed to take this photo. I admit, luck played a pretty big part in this. I noticed the moth was flying a rather predictable route, as it had visited the same flowers several times, in the same order. So I just focused on one of those flowers and waited. And sure enough, it soon came to feed on that exact flower and that's when I took this shot.
