Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my parent's house in Jonestown, Pennsylvania.

Time

This image was taken in the afternoon during late 2013 during a snow storm. I had only picked up a dslr camera a few months prior to taking this shot. I am almost entirely self-taught and this was very early in my learning process.

Lighting

This shot was taken in the afternoon during a snowstorm. It was taken from inside the house. The suet feeder was under the edge of the porch, which allowed the titmouse and suet feeder to be very clear, with the blur of the snow behind.

Equipment

At the time this was taken, I was using a Canon Rebel T3i. Settings: Aperture f/5.0, ISO 1250, shutter 1/200. Because I was just beginning as a photographer, at this time I was not shooting in manuel, rather was experimenting with Aperture Priority setting.

Inspiration

At the time I was a new photographer, still very much in the early learning phase, and just "playing" around with the camera. I love taking wildlife and nature photography. My parents are avid birdwatchers and feed birds year round which provides many opportunities to experiment with my camera. I love snow photography, but this was my first experience taking photos during a snowstorm. Despite this photo being taken at a time when I didn't really feel like I knew what I was doing, it still remains one of my favorite images I have ever captured.

Editing

There was minimal post-processing to this image, only balancing exposure and color slightly.

In my camera bag

A few years ago I made the switch from the Canon Rebel T3i to a Sony 6300 mirrorless in an attempt to switch to something of lighter weight. I use my Sony exclusively now and usually have an E1.8/ 50m, E3.5-5.6/18-135m, E3.5/30m Macro, or FE 3.5-6.3/24-240m in my bag depending on what type of photography I am doing - portrait, landscape, sports, or macro.

Feedback

My best advice is to try things out that are outside of your comfort zones, including "bad" weather situations. Don't be afraid to experiment! Some of my favorite images are from times I was experimenting with a new subject, new lens, or new weather/lighting conditions.
