Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on my deck just outside my living room window. I love interacting and feeding the hummingbirds each year. There were such an abundance of them when I took this photo. I wanted to show how many of the little hummers there were. This did not capture them all, but it shows there were several.

Time

This photo was taken September 20, 2013 at 6:14 pm. I noticed how many hummingbirds were buzzing my feeders. I took several photos and captured this moment. It is definitely one of my favorites.

Lighting

The lighting was natural outdoors.

Equipment

I was using a Nikon D3100 with an 18mm by 200mm lens. I did not have a tripod. I was balanced against a post to help prevent camera shake.

Inspiration

The hummingbirds themselves inspired me to take this picture. They give me so much joy each year. I wanted a photo to show how beautiful these amazing birds really are.

Editing

I cropped the photo to this size to focus on the hummingbirds. I also adjusted the contrast and sharpening to give the picture the color snap. I then added my watermark.

In my camera bag

I now have a Nikon D3200 with an 18mm by 200mm lens. Photography is my hobby, and I want my photos to tell a story. I use natural lighting and the outdoors for my inspiration. I have extra cards and batteries.

Feedback

Hummingbirds are extremely fast. I never have had any luck using a tripod since they move so quickly. They also fight to protect what is theirs. I recommend having several feeders around so when you get as many as I had this year, you will have plenty of food for them to access. I have found leaning against a post and balancing helps with focusing. I would focus on the feeder and have the camera ready to snap when I saw the birds come into view. I had my camera set on continuous so I could take several shots at one time. You never know when you will find the diamond in the rough.
