Location
This photo was taken in a stand of planted pines, a common sight in South Georgia. If you lay on your back on the soft bed of needles, the light whisper of the breeze through the tree tops will transport you to a higher plane.Time
After a long winter walk-about, I took a break in the pines. After seeing the beautiful afternoon sky through the branches, I knew I had to capture the sight. You really can't beat a nice South Georgia January!Lighting
The warm afternoon light had a different effect on the various trees, directly lighting some of them, while rim lighting others. A complete 360 of lighting effects in one photo.Equipment
I used a Canon 40D, a Tokina 10-17mm, and a Manfrotto tripod. Although attached to the tripod, the camera was practically laying on the ground, pointed straight up. The settings were 10mm, f/22, ISO 200. 1/8s.Inspiration
I was inspired by the order of the pine trees, interspersed by the random branches breaking up the design.Editing
This photo did not require much post processing at all. A basic levels tweak and sharpening is about it.In my camera bag
Being primarily a landscape/nature photographer, I generally carry everything from a 10-17mm fisheye lens to a 80-400mm zoom. A few filters such as a circular polarizer, an ND filter, etc. make specific shots possible. The assortment of equipment rides in a Lowepro Slingshot 300.Feedback
The only advice I can offer in this circumstance is to be aware of what's around you. Don't forget to look up while walking around...!
