Location
This photo was taken from the shore of famous Lake Louise, in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. The glacial lake is fed by the melt-waters of Victoria Glacier, seen in the background, the mineral sediments from which give the water this intense colour.Time
To capture the sun on the glacier, one has to be at Lake Louise soon after sunrise, as the lake stretches out toward Victoria glacier in a westerly direction. Before the sun gains height and warms the atmosphere, the lake surface is usually very calm. When it gets warmer, a wind comes up and creates ripples on the surface. On this sunny morning, on June 30th, I had taken several pictures of the sunrise reflections. I then begun walking south along the shore toward the pier where canoes are tied up overnight, when I came upon this scene: red, white, and blue, and not one ripple! It pays to get up early and get set up: it was 6:45 am!Lighting
I used the natural light, incorporating the reflected light from the snowy glacier and the mirror-images of the canoes in the composition.Equipment
Amazingly enough, I used a point-and-shoot Canon Powershot G6 camera: f/5.6, 1/60, 11.2 mm, for this picture.Inspiration
The Rocky Mountains always inspire me and I often go on hikes with my cameras. Living 175 km from this location at the time, I was very familiar with its beauty and various opportunities for good shots. I wanted to get sunrise pictures which I had never done yet. This meant getting on the road by 5:00 am. Can't get much more inspired and motivated than that to capture a photo like this.Editing
I brightened it.In my camera bag
I now only carry my Canon EOS Rebel XSi, plus my Canon EFS 55-250 mm telephoto lens.Feedback
Mountains offer myriad opportunities for fantastic photos: from macro-shots of flora and fauna, to panorama landscapes. Any advice I might give is to get to know your surroundings at different times of the day. Note where the sunlight and shadows hit. Often the best shots are not captured between 9 and 5!
