Behind The Lens

Location

Moraine Lake is located in the Valley of Ten Peaks, in Banff National Park, AB, Canada. The Lake is famous for its turquoise colour, contributed to silts fed by melting glaciers. It is at an elevation of approximately 1884 metres (6,181 feet). For scale, note the person in the lower right corner.

Time

The best time to photograph the lake and the surrounding mountains is sunrise and early morning, as this view is facing west. The mountains are lit up at sunrise, and reflected in the lake. In the afternoon and evening, the peaks are silhouetted against the sky. Waning daylight may be a time for gorgeous sunset pictures under the right conditions. Note that from November to late April, the 11-km road to Moraine Lake is closed to all traffic, due to heavy snow and high avalanche risk.

Lighting

Lighting is important in landscape photography, as well. Look for contrast between light and shadow, foreground and background. Is the main focal point lit up, or silhouetted? Experiment with time of day, sunny and cloudy weather, to learn how light affects mood.

Equipment

This photo was shot with a simple hand-held Canon PowerShot G6, f/4.0, 1/200.

Inspiration

Moraine Lake has been photographed by millions. During my few visits there I have captured various moods, seasons, and lighting conditions. What I looked for in this photo was contrast: light, scale, shape, and colour. Living in the city of Calgary at the time, it meant getting on the road by 5:30 AM to make the 2.5-hour drive to catch the sunrise at Lake Louise, followed by the drive to Moraine Lake to be here mid-morning. The resulting pictures were well worth it!

Editing

Image was sharpened, using Corel PaintShop Pro.

In my camera bag

The current contents of my bag are simple: a Canon EOS Rebel T7i camera with 18-55 mm lens, a 75-300mm telephoto lens, a tripod, and a portable round reflector.
