Location
This image was taken at the Navy Pier in Chicago, Il just after my wife and I where getting off a sunset lake cruise.Time
One of my favorite times of the day to shoot is at night. This is one of my favorite images taken without a tripod. I leaned against a pole to steady the camera and myself. This image was take at 8:45pm while my wife and I were on a walk while visiting Chicago. My wife was attending a Fiber Arts Workshop and I was strolling the streets of Chicago with my camera.Lighting
This all available light from the lights on the Ferris Wheel and gateway banner. Usually an image like this is taken with a tripod, but I did not have mine with me. I used a very slow shutter speed, a wide aperture, and a high ISO.Equipment
This image was taken hand held using a Pentax K20D with a smc Pentax-DQ 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 ALII lens with settings at 1/8 sec at f/5.6, 18mm, and ISO 1600. This was shot handheld leaning against a post to steady the camera.Inspiration
I was drawn to this image because of its lines and lighting. I loved the contrast. Somewhere in this beautiful picture was an interesting angle that would capture a moment in time and location.Editing
I did a fair amount of post processing using Lightroom and Photoshop. I had to adjust the exposure due to this being handheld. I could not get a decent image at a slower shutter speed. The ISO setting was pushing it for this camera. I adjusted the saturation and clarity. All digital images (in my opinion) need to be sharpened a little. If you over process an image like this may result in a halos. In my camera bag
Due to several reasons I have changed all my equipment to Nikon. I had been looking for an FX camera and Pentax just didn't have what I was looking for at the time. My wife uses the Pentax when we go out. It is a nice camera. In my bag I have a Nikon D800 and a number of Nikon lenses, (AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1:1.4, AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm 1:2.8G ED, AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1:2.8G ED, AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm 1:2.8G ED, and Sigma 50mm 1:1.4 DG). A MeFOTO tripod and a Quantaray tripod with an Avenger ball head.Feedback
If I were to take this shot again I would definitely have the camera on a tripod with a remote trigger release. I would shoot at an f / 8 aperture and adjust the shutter speed accordingly. I would also depend on if the Ferris Wheel was moving or stationary. With a full frame sensor would be able to obtain a more creative crop using the same shoot location. The newer FX cameras are fantastic at capturing images at high ISO setting, but there is still grain.
