Location
This photo was taken in Arizona at the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park which is located on the Arizona-Utah border within a 16 million acre Navajo Reservation.Time
This photo was taken in the late afternoon.Lighting
I took this photo from our hotel balcony in the late afternoon with the sun behind our hotel. The sun rises between these buttes so at this time of day, the sun was facing the buttes.Equipment
The camera I used was a Nikon D80. The lens used was a Nikkor 18-105mm, f/3.5-5.6. I did not use a tripod or nor was a flash used.I shot in auto mode.Inspiration
Monument Valley is a very special place especially to the Navajo Indians. It is sacred grounds where many Navajo's still live. The buttes are amazing in size and this particular photo hopefully portrays the size of the buttes compared to vehicles on the dirt road. I took this photo to hopefully illustrate the size of the buttes but also because of the beauty in this amazing part of the United States.Editing
I did some post-processing in Photoshop basically to bring out the colors and sharpness of the photo using the curves and color balance features. In my camera bag
I own a Nikon D80 and D7000 primarily using the D7000. I carry several lenses; the Nikkor 50mm-f/1.8D, the Tamaron 17-50mm, f/2.8 and the Nikkor 18-105mm, f/3.5-5.6. I also use a the SB-800 speed-light and a tripod.Feedback
Find the best photographic advantage point to capture the size of buttes or mountains and try to bring something else in the photo such as vehicles or trees, etc, that can illustrate the size of the mountains or buttes as in this case.
