Location
This photo of the Na Pali Coast or cliffs was taken from a catamaran while on a sunset dinner cruise to the Na Pali Coast in Kauai, Hawaii in early August 2013.Time
The time of day was in the early evening right before sunset.Lighting
The sun was low in the sky as it was early evening right before sunset. As the sun went down, the colors of the cliffs took on a variety of colors as shown in the photo.Equipment
I used a Nikon D7000 with no tripod. The lens was a Nikkor 18-105mm, f/3.5-5.6. I shot in aperature mode and did not use a flash. The settings were f/11, ISO 200, exposure 10/2000.Inspiration
The natural beauty surrounding us was astounding and I wanted to capture that in an image. Additionally, the cliffs were fasinating with the peaks and valleys so close together. I really had not experienced anything quite like that before and I wanted to keep the memory in an image.Editing
Yes. I used Photoshop to enhance the vibrant colors of the cliffs. I basically used the curves and color balance settings. I also wanted to bring out the bright cloud formation in the background. In my camera bag
I own a Nikon D80 and D7000 primarily using the D7000. I carry several lenses; the Nikkor 50mm-f/1.8D, the Tamaron 17-50mm, f/2.8 and the Nikkor 18-105mm, f/3.5-5.6. I also use a the SB-800 speedlight and a tripod.Feedback
Since this photo was taken from a moving catamaran, be sure to anchor yourself in such a way that will prevent camera shake. Since I did not use a tripod for this shot, I was pleased that I managed to get the result I got. Also, the time of day mattered greatly for this shot so that the vibrant colors of the cliffs were enhanced.
