Behind The Lens

Location

This image was created in my former retail studio space located in Whitinsville, MA. This studio space was located on the second floor of a commercial building. The space was approximately 11sq. ft. with camera room an office, a dressing room and storage room. the camera room presented a real challenge due to ceilings that were less than nine feet high. As a professional photographer it is my job to create stunning images regardless of whatever challenges I face and the low ceilings presented a day to day challenge.

Time

The time of day was about 2:00 P.M. The model in this image had driven more than two hours for this photo shoot.

Lighting

The lighting for this image was one light for the subject. I used a Larson Light bender to light the model and a promaster 400 to light the background. The main light was positioned left of the camera on a boom arm positioned slightly left and above the model. this provided not only light for her face torso and legs but a hair light as well.

Equipment

The camera was the Canon 5D MKII, lens was a Canon 70 - 200mm F/2.8 USM L IS, camera was mounted on a Manfrotto 3265 ballhead and a Titan stand. I used one Photogenic 1250 for the main light.

Inspiration

The model in this image is almost 6 foot tall and with her long legs, torso and long hair I thought it would create a great image.

Editing

I did what is called a dodge burn edit using layers in photoshop CS6 to bring out more detail in her left arm. I also brought down the high light areas on her legs also using layers and the paintbrush tool.

In my camera bag

In my bag I have one Canon 5Ds, one Canon 5D MKII, Canon 24 - 70mm F/2.8, Canon 70 - 200mm F/2.8, Canon 17 - 40mm F/4.0 lenses, a set of extension tubes and Canon 50mm compact macro 2.5. Two Canon 580 EXII speedlites, two Yongnuo YN600EX-RT speedlites, three Yongnuo YN622C wireless trigger/tranceivers and one Yongnuo YN622C-TX controler and one Phottix Pro Video Light V-LED9800.

Feedback

If you try to light in a similar was make sure you meter your light and don't settle for something you are not completely satisfied with. practice this lighting as much as you can before using it with a paying client.
