Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my bedroom at home. The plant in question was an orange tree that I had tried growing from a pip.

Time

I took this photo during twilight (between 6pm and 9pm). The streetlights hadn't come on yet so there was very little background light, but enough to have the red of the car in my neighbour's drive way coming through.

Lighting

Since the plant was in front of the window I couldn't use my flash for fear of a reflection, so I used the pound-store torch I kept beside my bed at the time to provide lighting. I experimented with the angles a bit, some worked, some didn't, but this I think was the best image I captured that day.

Equipment

To captured this I used my trusty Sony A200 with a 18-70mm lens. I held the camera so I didn't need a tripod.

Inspiration

The night I took this I had been sitting on my bed cleaning my lens. I had wanted to test it out but there wasn't enough light in my room and so I'd grabbed my torch and started experimenting. The plant on my windowsill, for some reason, seemed to be the perfect subject.

Editing

I don't think I did much to this photo actually... If I edited it at all, it probably would have just been a light unsharp-mask and an adjustment in the contrast.

In my camera bag

I don't have much equipment in my bag- being a university student kind of forbids that. At the moment I have my Sony A200 with the 18-70mm lense, and a 70-300mm lens.

Feedback

If you were trying for something similar I would suggest setting your camera so that you'll get the most shallow depth of field possible, and make sure you've got a steady hand. When I took this I had a torch in one hand and the camera in the other, so be prepared to improvise when needed.
