Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in my back yard during a seldom scene snow fall in South Carolina. I am a self taught photographer who experiments with every shot I take; this was one of those experiments.

Time

The picture was taken about mid-day and I can remember standing in the doorway of the deck door of the house trying to keep my hands from shaking from the cold. Keeping the lens from fogging up was another issue. Just the same, I just kept taking shots with various settings and when I went to edit the photos, this one stood out.

Lighting

It was an overcast day, of course, which helped to present the black and white feel with the red birdhouse as the only real color.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon Little Rebel under manual mode.

Inspiration

It was such a beautiful snow fall and so seldom seen where I live that it presented a picture that just had to be brought to life.

Editing

The only post - processing I did involved some cropping so the center could be found. Absolutely no touch ups were needed as far as I was concerned.

In my camera bag

My camera bag normally holds my camera and three telephoto lenses to capture things I cannot get close enough to, to capture.

Feedback

I really am not in a position to offer advice on how to capture a similar shot; I'm not trained. The one thing I can tell you though is try it; experiment; and don't be afraid to fail - that is how I have learned. It is so rewarding to finally get a really special shot when you have worked hard to develop a skill on your own.
