A photo I took of a Merlin (or possibly a Prairie Falcon) at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve near Huntington Beach, California. I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time to capture this shot of these elusive hawks. The bird seemed to be staring at me hypnotically, wondering what the heck I was doing pointing my camera at it. These beautiful birds, like most other species, are in a delicate ecological balance, and always hovering on the brink of extinction as their habitat encroachment and climate change threaten their continued existence. In the not-too-distant-future, photos like this may be the only evidence we have of their existence.
