The Wild Turkey is native to North America. Benjamin
Franklin called it a "bird of courage" and proposed it as the National Symbol instead of the American Bald Eagle. The male, pictured here, is called a Gobbler. Females are hens and their offspring are chicks or poults'. The male takes no part in parenting leaving the care to hens who feed them until they can take care of themselves. The hens are frequently seen on rural roads with several chicks trailing behind her.
Wild turkeys are popular game bird during hunting seasons in the Spring and Fall. There are numerous recipes for cooking these birds which differ from those for domestic turkeys. Enthusiasts consider the taste superior, but this opinion is not universal.
