I bought a new lens, the Sirui 75mm f1.8 anamorphic, and wanted to try it out on stills photos. My friend Franny put together a vibrant summer outfit (with a guitar prop) and we did a girl gone wandering shoot at an outlet mall. It was a hot sunny day, but there were spots with open shade. I shot this with the Sirui lens mounted on my Panasonic GH5 in the natural light and desqueezed the image in Photoshop.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at our outlet mall near the YVR airport, McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport.

Time

This was shot in the summer of 2023 around 1pm so it was full mid-day sun but we found some open shade.

Lighting

Nothing fancy about the lighting, it was mid-day during the summer, so we wanted to find some nice open shade amongst the buildings.

Equipment

This was shot on my Panasonic GH5 with my Sirui 75mm f1.8 anamorphic lens with just natural light.

Inspiration

My friend wanted to shoot her new outfit, and the outlet mall worked well for it. I wanted to test out my new Sirui 75mm f1.8 anamorphic lens for still photos.

Editing

Just some basic adjustments in ACR and maybe some filters from the Color Efex package in the Nik Collection. The only different thing I did here was I had to desqueeze the squeeze image produced by the anamorphic lens.

In my camera bag

I shot all brands but I favour the micro four thirds system so I'll typically have some combination of Panasonic and Olympus camera bodies, a main body and a backup body. Some combination of wide, normal and short tele lenses from Panasonic/Leica, Zuiko, Sigma and more recently Sirui.

Feedback

Nothing unusual about the photo, just a bit of a widescreen look. In my case, I used an anamorphic lens. Some folks just use a spherical lens and crop off the top and bottom to get a similar look. And some others get an anamorphic adapter for their spherical lenses.
