Lake Pend 'Oriell is a giant landlocked lake. In fact it's large enough, deep enough, to have it's own US Navy nuclear submarine testing and training base! You can tell when the subs go by the bays because the surface waves go from averaging 8 to 12 inches high and 16 to 30 inches wide - to 2 to 3 FEET high and perhaps 4 or 5 feet wide!! Submarines have a lot of displacement!
Naturally occuring waves can also become quite extreme during stormy weather as this photo shows. I was sitting on a rock along the wind - swept shoreline when the waves exploded! The photo lacks context but the wave drops at the top of the pic are well over twelve feet high!
