I had no idea what this was - but I heard it say - Take Me To Your Leader!!
Recently, I discovered that this unusual alien-looking insect is actually a Giant Florida Katydid (Stilpnochlora couloniana) that lives in Florida, the largest katydid in the US, with adults being up to 2.5 inches long. As an adult, its wings will extend beyond its body (out into the space between its hind “knees”, giving it a long, flattened body that resembles a leaf. As you might expect, they can both fly and jump, much like a grasshopper.

Great grasshopper reflection image. Did you told him that you were the leader? 😉

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at an art fair in Florida. The unusual looking insect is a giant Florida katydid. It is the first and last one I have ever seen. It was perched on a large door window that was reflecting the blue sky and clouds behind me.

Time

It was about 2 PM on a sunny Florida day that I spotted the large insect.

Lighting

The lighting from behind me was perfect to beautifully illuminate the Katydid and cast shadows of the katydid on the glass. It was a perfect setting in every way!

Equipment

I was using my Nikon D300 camera with my 18 to 200 Nikon zoom lens, handheld to get the shot.

Inspiration

The katydid was so very unusual and large (about 3 inches long) that it caught my attention and interest to photograph it.

Editing

I did some contrast and color adjustments to bring out the beautiful colors and cropped the image slightly.

In my camera bag

I usually have a camera bag with alternate lenses and filters, but on this occasion, since we were walking around the art show, I only had the one camera and lens with me.

Feedback

My advice is to always be observant and ready with your camera since you never know when you will find a great subject like this katydid.
