Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Music Meadows Ranch in Westcliffe, Colorado.

Time

The photo was taken very early in the morning, just as the sun was beginning to rise over the horizon.

Lighting

The lighting was natural light at sunrise, which provided a sidelight as the horses were running.

Equipment

Nikon D850 camera, Tamron 70-200 F/2.8 lens, hand held, no flash. I had the lens at full length 200mm and a camera setting of 1/1000 of a second. This required a high ISO of 9000 in order to maintain a high shutter speed with low sunrise light conditions.

Inspiration

I was at a ranch early in the morning and wanted to capture photos with soft light during sunrise.

Editing

I did post processing with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, along with a few adjustments made with the NIK Color Efex Pro plugin. I also used Topaz Photo AI to reduce the noise in the image.

In my camera bag

I currently use Nikon Z7 2 and Nikon D850 camera bodies along with an assortment of Nikkor, Tamron and Sigma lenses. I also use a Nikon Z 5 camera that is converted to infrared.

Feedback

The key to this image was to maintain a high shutter speed to avoid motion blur of the running horses. I set the camera to "shutter priority" with a setting of 1/1000 of a second, full open aperture at f/2.8, and auto ISO so the camera could maintain an adequate exposure. The ISO came out to 9000.
