The jay's scientific name, Garrulus glandarius , translates as "perpetually scratching acorn seeker." That only typifies the jay in winter, because during the breeding season it is remarkably quiet. Originally a rather shy forest bird, but now also widely found in urban areas. In the forest, jays have the function of intruder alarm; many animals respond to their alarm call and hide. Jays are known for the striking blue and black striped wing markings.
