Behind The Lens

Location

This portrait has been taken in my small studio near the Lake of Constance in South Germany. In my studio I created a small corner for raw and minimalist portraits which focus the personen and nothing else.

Time

This day was amazing. The sun was behind the clouds and delivered a beautiful light through the windows in the room. It was quite after 01:00 a.m.

Lighting

I wanted that photo to be as raw and emitional as possible. Therefore I used only sunlight which was shining into the room through clouds. I love that kind of light for such portaits. You need not much more than such a light and a good connection to the person infront the camera.

Equipment

This portrait was shot with my Leica M11 and the 50mm Leica Summilux lens. I did not use any additional equipment, despite a black backdrop.

Inspiration

During the portrait session with Laura we had a great conversation on emotions and capturing emotions in portraits. Her mother was participating the session and said, that she doesn't like portraits which show people crying. I said to her, that this is such a great gift for a photographer when the person infront of the camera has such a deep connection with you that she opens her feelings and shows such an intensive emotion. Somehow this connected so deeply with Laura and when I startet to take the next pictures she started crying infront of my camera. This was such an emotional and amazing moment.

Editing

Yes I do some post processing on my pictures in general. What I absolutely not do is beauty retoushing. I love the beauty of people how they are without any corrections. I added some grain and did some slight dodge and burn.

In my camera bag

I have always my like M11 in my bag. Depending on which bag I use and which circumstance I have, I put a selection out of my my 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 75mm and 90mm lens into my bag. Of course I put some SD Cards and batteries in my bag, too.

Feedback

To capture such an emotional portrait it is absolutely relevant to connect with the person infront of your camera. Addtionally it requires to give the person space to express themeselves. Before you start taking the photos explain which directions for the head, shoulders, arms, ... are great and then shut up and let them express themselves and just whatch and click the button in the right moment ;-)
