Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Michael Lau's studio in Nottingham, UK..

Time

This was towards the end of a four hour shoot, my first shoot with the delectable Caz (Cariad Celis), a fulltime model originally from Wales. It was about 1pm and we were both starting to feel that it was lunchtime !

Lighting

The lighting was mainly artificial with some ambient natural light. We wanted the lighting to be sufficient to capture the detail without dominating the image.

Equipment

It was shot on a Nikon Z9 wuth FTZ II adaptor and my trusty Nikon 24-70 f2.8 lens. Shot handheld, with studio flash.

Inspiration

We had done a fairly standard and static model shoot and wanted to get something with movement and energy, so decided to do a 'fairy dance' type set with floaty skirts, and just 'have fun' with it and hopefllu get some great shots !

Editing

I started by cropping the image to remove any negative space that I didn't want to use, then made minor adjustments to the exposure, contrast, highlights and shadows, and sightly increased the texture, but then slightly reduced the clarity to reduce the technical feel to give it more of a fantasy feel to the image.

In my camera bag

Usually two bodies, for studio work a D810 and either Z9 or D6, with Nikon 24-70f2.8, and Sigma and 85 mm Art f1.4 lenses. For Sports / Wildlife work, in bad weather a D3s and a D3 with Nikon 200-500 with 1.4 converter, and Nikon 80-200, in normal weather I'd swap the bodies for the D6 and Z9. Manfrotto carbon fbre tripod, remote release, Lee filter set if appropriate. For Landscape work would take my Sigma 24mm Art lens. And the usual spare batteries, memory cards, cleanng kit, camera strap(s).

Feedback

Have fun and take risks ! Make mistakes, but learn from them, and be prepared to reshoot and retry. As they say in the North of England "him that has never made a mistake, has never made 'owt (anything)!" So push the envelope, break the rules, and enjoy your photography !
