Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this photo indoors in one of the buildings at Fort Walsh National Historic Site (Cypress Hills Provincial Park - West Block, Saskatchewan Canada).

Time

I shot this photo at 2:10PM CST (2022 September 160.

Lighting

The lighting was poor - from a few bare incandescent light bulbs and an open door letting in some daylight (it was very overcast and/ or raining off and on, so there was not any sunlight.)

Equipment

I captured this image hand-held with my cellular phone - a Samsung S8+ SM-G955W. The phone camera was set for automatic. The settings it automatically set for this photo was f1.7, 1/16 sec ISO 200 focal length 4.25 (35mm focal = 26mm), Automatic White Balance, Exposure 0 step, Center-weighted Average Metering.

Inspiration

I enjoy visiting museums and museum-type facilities. Fort Walsh holds a lot of local history. I grew up on a farm and also learned about Fort Walsh in school (local history studies), from historical accounts (books, films, local history write-ups, etc.) I tried to shoot as many photos as I could of the items I was interested in or intrigued by. These old ropes hanging on the wall in the stable building caught my attention, reminding me of growing up on a farm and remembering how my father hung the ropes he used up on the barn walls as well.

Editing

This photo was shot in JPEG. I used ACDSee Photo Studio Ultimate 2020 to rotate to straighten, to make adjustments to the exposure/ lighting, and to crop the photo.

In my camera bag

I have my Nikon D750, D200 and D5100 cameras in my bags along with my Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II, a Tamron SP 24-70MM F/2.8 Di VC USD, a Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm F/1.8G Lens, a Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD Lens, Nikon f/2.8 105mm Micro f/2.8 lens, and a Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary Lens. I also always have my Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra cellular phone with me (I like to use it when I want or need a wider angle photo.) If I am going to go for a drive to spend some time out and about shooting, I like to take all my cameras and lenses... you just never know what you're going to need. If I am going out to shoot something specific, I take my Nikon D750 along with the 70-200mm lens, 24-70mm lens, 50mm lens, and depending what my shooting goal is, sometimes the 105mm lens.

Feedback

My advice for others is to keep your batteries charged up, keep your camera(s) handy (you never know when an opportunity to shoot will arise), and to appreciate everything around you and to always look for photo opportunities. . Then shoot, shoot, shoot.... shoot as often as you can. Look for photo opportunities everywhere including in your own home and/ or yard, and at public events. Go to local museums and galleries in your area as well as when you go out of town. (Before photographing in museums, galleries, etc., confirm photography is allowed. Some places do not allow photography, or may allow photography WITHOUT flash. Respect their rules.) Try to take advantage of the lighting - when it is sunny or when it is cloudy or if rain or any other weather system is moving in, and play with your f stops. Take more than one photo... you can always delete them if they do not turn out. My advice is to try different camera settings, cameras and lenses as well. My most important advice of all is to pick up your camera(s) and go out and have fun!!
