Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at home with a single flash.

Time

It was at night to help achieve a black background and not have any light spill.

Lighting

It was taken with a single flash. The composited smoke elements were taken with a single flash as well.

Equipment

I used my Canon 7D on a tripod with a timer to capture the self portrait. I had a single flash firing from my left side.

Inspiration

I wanted to create a photo that showed me emoting energy. I feel we all emit types of energy that can’t be seen. I wanted to represent that in a photo.

Editing

I combined smoke elements that I shit on top to create the energy effects. I also used composite modes with layers to achieve the look of my body being in an energy state. Some color correction and vibrance to push the theme as well as the usual develop process before the compositing.

In my camera bag

Camera, single flash, extra batteries, extra card and camera strap. Pretty simple unless I am going on a dedicated shoot, then I pack up appropriately for that shoot.

Feedback

Think of something unusual that you would like to convey. Think of it in layers and multiple shoots. Use similar lighting and placement to achieve a better composite later.
