The plumage of male mandarin ducks is very striking and colorful. However, once a year, during the molt, they lose their color brilliance. Then they are just as brown-grey as the females. It is called the 'eclipse cloth'. Only the red bill reveals who the male is. In the Netherlands, the Mandarin duck is spreading further and further.
