Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the early morning at William B. Umstead State Park in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Time

It was a cool, foggy winter morning, and I decided to get out before sunrise to capture the forest and all the atmosphere the fog creates. I was walking across the street, and just happened to see this view as the sun slightly broke through the fog.

Lighting

The lighting here was 100% natural since nature often provides the best light. The fog created the darker shadows under the trees, and the sun barely broke through the fog to light up the sky at the end of the street. The trees were separated just enough to allow the sunlight to reflect off the wet road, which made the yellow lines really stand out.

Equipment

This was taken with a Nikon D3200 with the 18-55mm kit lens that came with the camera. No tripod, no filters, no fancy equipment. Just an older camera and the beauty provided by nature.

Inspiration

This photo was actually not planned. I was walking across the street to the path into the forest, and when I looked down the street, this is what I saw. I tried shooting a couple different angles, and the angle from the lines in the road was the most intriguing. The leading lines fading into the dark, shadowy forest and bright light of the sky was too awesome to pass up.

Editing

Most of the post-processing was done in Lightroom to get the high contrast of the sky and the forest, and give the yellow lines a little more pop. I then transferred the photo to Photoshop and created a black and white top layer, and then used a layer mask to bring the yellow lines back into the picture.

In my camera bag

When I took this photo I was still using a Nikon D3200. I had the Nikon 18-55mm and 55-200mm kit lenses, and a Nikon 50mm prime lens. I recently decided to upgrade and now have a Nikon D7500 with a 10-20mm wide angle lens, an 18-120mm lens, and a 70-300mm lens. I love to shoot around water and in the fog, so I always have a cleaning kit to keep the lens spot free. My tripod is always attached to my bag, and the zipper pockets are always full of snacks.

Feedback

There are an endless number of places you can take a photo similar to this. You can pick pretty much any forest road, and just look for the best vantage point. Early morning light is my preference, and the roads are usually pretty quiet at that hour. I would highly recommend having a spotter with you to keep an eye on traffic since it is very easy to get caught up in your photo and forget that you are in the middle of the street.
