Location
This photo was taken while my family was at the river. My daughter was looking up at her older cousin laughing at him, and I was able to capture the moment.Time
The lighting for this photo was pretty harsh. It was in the middle of the day in July, so the sun was high overhead and very bright.Lighting
I got lucky with lighting on this one. My daughter happened to be facing just the right way to light only her forehead and the tip of her nose. If she was facing the other way the photo would most likely have been washed out and not very good. We were also right on the river, so the midday sun was reflecting off the water too.Equipment
This was shot with my Nikon D3200, 55-200mm @ 165mm, f5.3, ISO 400, 1/640 sec. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
I always have my camera nearby when I am with my kids because the candid moments are my favorite. My daughter is very photogenic, especially when she is not hamming it up for the camera! Her smile lights up my world, and I try to capture it as often as possible.Editing
I did post-processing in Lightroom. I made it a lighter black and white tone, and kept the contrast somewhat to a minimum. The eyes initially looked like black spots, but I was able to use the adjustment brush to lighten the exposure and add some detail. I also used the adjustment brush to add a little sharpness to the freckles on her cheek and nose because I love them. I then added a soft white vignette to add to the overall feel of the photo. In my camera bag
I am still pretty new to photography, so my camera bag is somewhat light. I have my Nikon D3200 with the 18-55mm and 55-200mm kit lenses, and I usually have my sturdy tripod with me just in case.Feedback
Always be ready! You never know when the candid moments are going to occur. If you have children, just sit back and watch them play and laugh. Any time I try to get my daughter's attention for a picture she always cheeses for the camera, which takes away from the photos. If I just sit there quietly and let her imagination run wild, she never ceases to amaze me. The spontaneity of the moment is what makes it unique.
