Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at one of my favorite places to go camping, the Mogollon Rim in Arizona, USA.

Time

I shot this just after 1900 in toward the end of May, as I was off roading in my truck on a near by trail and spotted a flurry of activity by these trees!

Lighting

The sunlight came through the trees at just the right angle that this little swarm of bugs lit up like floating orbs! It was unreal I'd never seen anything like it!

Equipment

I pulled over and snapped this using a my trusty Canon 5D MIII, EF70-200mm f.28L lens (1/800 sec at f2.8, ISO 200, 150 mm), and my Manfrotto tripod.

Inspiration

The dust from my truck added a beautiful haze to an already stunning golden hour, but when I saw the way the little bugs were catching the light too I knew I had to take the photo! It was too amazing of an opportunity to pass up! I had just never seen them catch light that way before, they looked so otherworldly and magical!

Editing

Yes, I enjoy the art of post processing almost as much as I love shooting an image. Other than pushing the vibrance a little bit I didn't really do much with the colors. I did add a slight tint to boost the reds just slightly. I also pulled up some of my shadows and pulled down the highlighting to even things out a little while pushing my blacks just slightly so as not to lose the contrast. and I added the slightest vignetting to help pull focus to the bugs.

In my camera bag

Because my shoots can vary so drastically I usually have a different bag for every type of shoot for both film and photo. But if its a run and gun type of day where I'm just exploring the world I usually carry my 5D MarkIII, 70-200mm, 24-105mm, small tripod, godox flash, shutter release, my iPhone with "plan-it" app, GoPro, and lots of water!

Feedback

Always take the shot! If you see something beautiful or the light is hitting something in a way you love don't be afraid to stop what you're doing and capture the moment, you never know if and when you may get the opportunity again! I can't tell you how many times I've been driving around seen something that piqued my interest and have turned around or stopped to check it out! My piggy back on that is ALWAYS carry a camera haha, even if its just your phone! You may find something you like and you can snap a shot on your phone and pin it on your maps (that's what I do) so that I can come back another day at a similar time with my equipment ready to capture something similar.
