Location
I took this photograph from our Land Cruiser in the Kruger National Park, while on a self-drive from Crocodie Bridge where we chose a game-viewing loop from Crocodile Bridge to Malelane Gate. A short distance from the exit gate this large lone tusker was ambling through the grassland towards our vehicle, stopping periodically for a vegetation snack.Time
The photograph was taken in the late afternoon, close to the time of leaving the Kruger National Park as the gates close at 18:00 for day visitors (we were staying at Ngwenya Lodge which is situated on the Crocodile River just outside the park - where game from Kruger National Park comes to drink throughout the day).Lighting
Due to the time of day the light was diffused, and whilst there appear to be shadows on the elephants skin, it is likely the blotchy colouring was partly due to an earlier bathing session in a muddy pool .Equipment
The camera is a well used EOS70D. This photograph was taken while rested on small window tripod.Inspiration
Driving in a game reserve, I always have my camera ready to take any surprise shot which may appear around the next corner.Editing
The post-processing was limited to lightening the photograph slightly. In my camera bag
This image was taken with a Canon zoom 100-400mm lens. My normal lense is a Canon EFS 18-135, and I also hav a Canon Macro Lens EF100mm for the little critters, which are not to be neglected.Feedback
Patience, time and luck are required for wildlife photography. Every game drive is different, with no knowledge of what will present itself, however it seldom disppoints. For night or dawn potography it is recommended to sleep over inside the park, which has accommodation budgets for every pocket.
